DIRECTIONS
AND CHECK-IN & OUT PROCEDURES
FOR SUGARMAN CABIN
SO, YOU'RE ON
YOUR WAY. NOW ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS FIND THE CABIN. FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS
CAREFULLY AND THAT WON'T BE A PROBLEM. I STRONGLY SUGGEST MAKING A COPY OF THIS
AND TAKING IT ALONG. IT COULDN'T HURT.
FROM
BALTIMORE:
GO ON
BALTIMORE BELTWAY (695) TO ROUTE 70 EXIT.
FROM THE 695
ENTRANCE ONTO ROUTE 70 WEST GO 37.8 MILES TOWARDS FREDERICK TO "EXIT 53 -
ROUTE 15 NORTH". NOTE: JUST BEFORE EXIT 53 YOU WILL PASS THE MARKET STREET
EXIT. AS SOON AS YOU SEE THE MARKET STREET, GET IN THE RIGHT LANE AS ROUTE 15
NORTH EXIT WILL COME UP FAST. YOU ARE NOW IN FREDERICK ON ROUTE 15 HEADED
NORTH.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FROM
WASHINGTON:
GO ON
WASHINGTON BELTWAY (495) TO ROUTE 270.
GO WEST
TOWARDS FREDERICK UNTIL YOU GET TO ROUTE 15 NORTH. YOU ARE NOW IN FREDERICK
ON ROUTE 15 HEADED NORTH.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMON
DIRECTIONS FROM FREDERICK (FROM THE SOUTH):
GO ABOUT 11.5
MILES NORTH ON ROUTE 15 WHERE YOU WILL MAKE A LEFT ONTO AUBURN ROAD. AS YOU
APPROACH AUBURN (WHICH IS ONLY ON THE LEFT SIDE), YOU WILL SEE BECKLEY'S
CAMPERS SALES, A CITGO GAS STATION AND A 7-11 ON YOUR RIGHT. THIS IS WHERE YOU
TURN LEFT. AFTER YOU GET ON AUBURN ROAD, MAKE SURE TO FORK TO THE RIGHT SO THAT
YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY PASS A FLEA MARKET ON YOUR LEFT AND YOU ARE RUNNING
PARALLEL TO ROUTE 15 WHICH WILL BE ON YOUR RIGHT.
FROM THE POINT
WHERE YOU TURNED, GO 1.8 MILES ON AUBURN ROAD. YOU WILL HAVE PASSED SPRINGFIELD
MANOR WINERY AND A FARM ON THE LEFT WITH THE NAME SPRINGFIELD DAIRY FARM ON THE
BARN. GO PAST THE FARM TO THE NEXT REAL PAVED ROAD WHERE YOU WILL SEE A SIGN WHICH
READS "SHUFF'S MEAT MARKET" (IF YOU GET LOST, EVERYONE KNOWS SHUFF'S
MEATS). [[[PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T TURN IN THE THE GRAVEL DRIVEWAY JUST
PAST SPRINGFIELD MANOR WINERY. A LOT OF PEOPLE SEEM TO END UP GOING UP MY
NEIGHBOR'S LONG GRAVEL DRIVEWAY POSSIBLY BECAUSE OF CONFUSING THE WINERY WITH
THE FARM OR BECAUSE GPS ERROR SENDS THEM THERE.
ALSO PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR GUESTS]]] THIS IS BAUGHER ROAD
WHERE YOU WANT TO TURN (NOTE: THERE IS ANOTHER BAUGHER ROAD ENTRANCE THAT YOU
WILL HAVE PASSED; ALSO NOTE: IF YOU COME BACK TO ROUTE 15 AGAIN, YOU HAVE
OVERSHOT BY ABOUT 200 YARDS).
GO LEFT
FOLLOWING BAUGHER ROAD 0.9 MILES TO OUR DRIVEWAY. DURING THIS LAST MILE, YOU
MAY WONDER WHETHER YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT PATH OR ON SOMEONE'S PRIVATE DRIVEWAY
AS THE ROAD IS A LITTLE NARROW. YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT PATH. RIGHT AFTER YOU PASS
THE LAST HOUSE, GO A FEW HUNDRED FEET UNTIL YOU DRIVE OVER A TINY STREAM. OUR
DRIVEWAY IS ON THE LEFT JUST PAST THIS SIGN WITH A CHAIN WRAPPED AROUND TREES
AND A SIGN THAT SAYS "AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY" EITHER BLOCKING THE
DRIVE OR LAYING ON THE GROUND. THERE IS NO WAY TO OVERSHOOT DRIVEWAY BY MORE
THAN ABOUT 80 FEET AS THERE IS A WOOD BARRIER GATE AND A TURNAROUND.
FOLLOW THE
DRIVEWAY ABOUT 400 FEET TO THE CABIN. YOU'VE MADE IT. HAVE A GREAT TIME!!
_________________________________________________________________
IF YOU'RE
COMING FROM THE NORTH (GETTYSBURG, EMMITSBURG):
FOLLOW
DIRECTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE TO GET TO THE TOWN OF THURMONT, MARYLAND.
THIS ASSUMES
YOU ARE ABOVE (NORTH OF) THURMONT. GET ON ROUTE 15 AND GO SOUTH. THERE ARE A
FEW THURMONT EXITS. THE LAST THURMONT EXIT SAYS RT 806 AND IT'S WHERE ONE WOULD
GET OFF TO GO TO MOUNTAINGATE RESTAURANT. DO NOT GET OFF !! STAY ON ROUTE 15 SOUTH
AND WHEN YOU GO OVER RT 806, SET YOUR ODOMETER TO 0. WHEN YOU'VE GONE 3.0
MILES, MAKE A RIGHT ONTO AUBURN ROAD. GO 0.2 MILES WHERE YOU WILL SEE A SIGN
WHICH READS "SHUFF'S MEAT MARKET" (IF YOU GET LOST, EVERYONE KNOWS SHUFF'S
MEATS). THIS IS BAUGHER ROAD WHERE YOU WANT TO TURN RIGHT.
THE LAST HOUSE, GO A FEW HUNDRED FEET (LESS THAN A FOOTBALL FIELD SO GO VERY
SLOWLY!) AND PASS A SMALL ASPHALT AREA THAT LOOKS LIKE A SPOT TO TURN AROUND
AND THE NEXT THING ON THE LEFT IS OUR DRIVEWAY. OUR DRIVEWAY IS ON THE LEFT
WITH A CHAIN WRAPPED AROUND TREES AND A SIGN THAT SAYS "AUTHORIZED
PERSONNEL ONLY" EITHER BLOCKING THE DRIVE OR LAYING ON THE GROUND. THERE
IS NO WAY TO OVERSHOOT DRIVEWAY BY MORE THAN ABOUT 80 FEET AS THERE IS A WOOD
BARRIER GATE AND A TURNAROUND. IF YOU GET TO THE PARK SIGNS AND CAN GO NO
FURTHER THE CABIN IS ABOUT 400 FEET TO YOUR LEFT.
FOLLOW THE DRIVEWAY ABOUT 400 FEET TO THE CABIN. YOU'VE MADE IT. HAVE A GREAT TIME!!
THE ADDRESS IS 12021 BAUGHER ROAD, THURMONT, MD. 21788. MY ADVICE IS TO USE MY DIRECTIONS AS GPS's AND SITES LIKE MAPQUEST OR GOOGLE MAP WILL GET YOU CLOSE, BUT NOT TO THE CABIN DOOR. THEY ARE GETTING BETTER BUT PLEASE KEEP MY DIRECTIONS HANDY.
GPS COORDINATES: WHEN I TRAVEL, I LIKE TO USE THE STARS AND THE SUN FOR GUIDANCE BUT THERE ARE SOME OF YOU (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) THAT LIKE TECHNOLOGICAL TOYS. FOR THAT REASON, THE COORDINATES, ACCORDING TO GARMIN GPS UNIT USING ENROUTE 2.0 SOFTWARE, PLUG IN POSITION N 39.34.100 AND WEST 77.26.425. I'M TOLD THIS SHOULD PUT YOU WITHIN 19' +/- OF THE CABIN FRONT DOOR.

Things to Do
CHECK-IN PROCEDURE
When you
arrive there will probably be a chain across the driveway with a sign that says
“Authorized Personnel Only”. On the driver's
side of the chain is a combination lock. The Combination is 8888.
Unlock the lock, move chain
to the right side of driveway and lock the lock on the chain on the end.
If you arrive
at night, lights should come on automatically as you approach. Go ONTO the
small porch and stand in front of the door. Look behind you on the left side
and you will see the lock box in a black rubber protector. By now, I should have sent you the key code
for this box. Put in code and push latch
down. Key to the door and the padlock
key are there. Use the house key (the
larger key) to unlock the side door (the door closest to the driveway). When
entering, don't touch top right or bottom left switches as they are the
switches for the automatic lights mentioned above.
HEAT IF
WINTER. AS WE ALL ARE AWARE, ENERGY COSTS ARE ABSURD. I AM TRYING MY BEST TO
KEEP THE COSTS TO MY GUESTS AS LOW AS POSSIBLE BY COUNTING ON THEM USING ENERGY
PRUDENTLY AND CONSERVATIVELY. HOW DO I DEFINE PRUDENT? BE COMFORTABLE. DON'T
TURN ON THE HEAT AND THEN OPEN THE WINDOWS. SPECIFICALLY WHAT AM I SUGGESTING?
WHEN YOU ARRIVE, PUT THE THERMOSTAT ON 65 AND THEN GET A ROARING FIRE GOING
WITH THE FIREPLACE FAN ON (SWITCH ON RIGHT OF FIREPLACE). DEPENDING ON OUTSIDE
TEMPERATURE, THIS CAN HEAT THE WHOLE CABIN. LET ME REITERATE, I WANT MY GUESTS
TO BE COMFORTABLE AND ENJOY THEIR TIME AT THE CABIN.
Go upstairs
and turn heat from 40 to 65. Note: As thermostat is in upper bedroom, if you
set the heat on 70, it will get too hot downstairs.
If you'd like,
start fire in fireplace (should be wood on front porch). Turn on fan switch to
right of fireplace box. This fireplace will essentially heat the cabin. If
possible, before you leave, reload porch wood for next user as it would be a
bummer for next person to come after snowstorm and have no wood to burn.
WATER
Go to basement laundry area and face light blue water tank. To left of tank is small electric box. Open and flip breaker on (UP). If you hear water surging, you are done. If not, there is small gray pressure switch. Turn that on. Next, to right of the tank is a larger gray box with an on off switch on the front. Flip this switch to ON, which will give you hot water. Note: Hot water heater is set up to cut itself off every night at midnight. 80 gallons will remain hot for days this way. If a lot of people plan to take showers following day, go down in morning and turn ON again.
IF WINTER, TAKE A LOOK AT GAUGE ON OIL TANK (IN DOOR BOTTOM OF STEPS) AND IF LESS THAN 1/2 OF A TANK OF OIL, LET ME KNOW BY PHONE OR EMAIL.
CHECK- OUT PROCEDURE
IF WINTER, TURN HEAT BACK TO 40........ . IF SUMMER TURN AIR CONDITIONING UP TO 85.
GO TO LAUNDRY AREA . AND STAND IN FRONT OF LIGHT BLUE WATER TANK. OPEN BOX ON LEFT AND FLIP SWITCH OFF (DOWN). THIS CUTS OFF WATER. No need to do anything with pressure switch or hot water heater.
MAKE SURE ALL LIGHTS AND ELECTRIC ROOM HEATERS ARE OFF. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO CHECK HEATERS IN MASTER BEDROOM, BUNK ROOM AND BASEMENT. WITH ENERGY COSTS WHAT THEY ARE TODAY, IF THESE HEATERS ARE LEFT ON IT COULD VERY EASILY WASTE $100.00. I MENTION IT SO STRONGLY BECAUSE MORE THAN ONE GUEST HAS FORGOTTEN TO DO THIS.
MAKE SURE THE OVEN IS TURNED OFF. YOU'D BE SURPRISED HOW MANY PEOPLE FORGET TO DO THIS.
TAKE A LOOK AT GAUGE ON OIL TANK AND LET ME KNOW HOW MUCH IS LEFT IN THE TANK. THIS WILL HELP ME MAKE SURE MY NEXT GUEST HAS SUFFICIENT HEATING OIL.
MAKE SURE ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE LOCKED.
THERE'S NOTHING NICER THAN A BEAUTIFUL FIRE WHEN IT'S COLD OUTSIDE. I'M HAPPY TO SUPPLY A LARGE AMOUNTS OF FIREWOOD FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT. DRY FIREWOOD ON THE PORCH CAN BE A WONDERFUL THING. THEREFORE, IF YOU HAVE THE ABILITY, IT'S GREATLY APPRECIATED IF YOU LOAD THE PORCH WITH WOOD BEFORE YOU LEAVE.
PUT CHAIN BACK ON TREE WITH LOCK.
Conserve energy. Clean up and take
trash with you when you leave. My neighbors on Baugher Road have asked that you
NOT leave your trash in their trash cans if the cans are out. My neighbor at
Shuff's Meat Market has said if someone leaves trash in their dumpster, they
will prosecute. PLEASE !! Hang bath mats on side of tubs (to allow bottoms to
dry). If you use something up, please replace. We hope you enjoy the Cabin and
come back again real soon.
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
Q&A
Although
things are not real complicated at the Cabin, sometimes questions arise. The
purpose of this section is to make answers to possible questions immediately available.
For the most part, you can read them while at the Cabin if you need them.
Q: You have a
garbage disposal and you're on a septic system?
A. Yep, but if it's a choice between putting solids in the trash or in the
disposal, please use the trash as it's really not good for a septic system.
Q: Air conditioning doesn't seem to be
working?
A: On the way to the basement, there is an
emergency switch that cuts off the heating and air conditioning systems. It's
purpose of the switch is if you ever feel something is very wrong with either
heating or AC system, you should flip this switch to
OFF and it will cut everything off. This switch is required by code for safety
reason and it's location is where it should be. It is
near the switch for the light to go down to the basement. Two times, people
have turned it off by mistake while going down to the basement. If the AC isn't
working, this is the first thing to check. It should be in the ON position.
Q: Do
you supply linens and towels?
A: Linens and
towels are supplied but if you use them, you are responsible for washing and
drying them before you leave. A special request has been made by my wife. She
spent an hour organizing and sorting the sheets (queen sized in a bin marked
queen sized, king sized in a bin marked king sized, etc.). PLEASE make sure the
cleaned sheets make it back into the proper bin.
To save time,
many people have elected to bring their own linens (or sleeping bags), pillows,
and towels. That way, when it's time to go, they just toss their own stuff in
the car and go. A BIG PROBLEM I'VE BEEN HAVING IS WHEN PACKING UP, GUESTS ARE
MISTAKENLY LOADING UP SOME OF THE CABIN LINENS AND SLEEPING BAGS. I KNOW IT'S
NOT INTENTIONAL. PLEASE, PLEASE DO YOUR BEST TO MAKE SURE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN
AND IF IT DOES, LET ME KNOW.
ALSO, IF YOU
USE THE DRYER, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PULL OUT THE LINT FILTER AND PLACE THE LINT
IN THE BAG HANGING OVER THE DRYER (IF I GET ENOUGH, I MAY MAKE IT INTO A
SWEATER ;<) ). OTHERWISE THE DRYER CAN OVERHEAT AND CAUSE DAMAGE.
With regard to the Washer, if you open it up to put more stuff in mid-cycle, YOU NEED TO HIT THE START BUTTON FOR A SECOND (NOT 3 SECONDS) AFTER YOU CLOSE IT AGAIN.
Q: What should
I do with trash?
A: Just like with
camping, what you bring in must be taken out. What we do is we'll go and fill
our car with gas and drop a bag of trash in the station's
can or just take it with us when we go home. When it's cool, we burn the paper in the
fireplace which greatly reduces the amount of trash and also gives back some heat.
Q: The fireplace is smoking up the room. What's going on?
A: I personally always leave the fireplace flue opened and I'd prefer it be left that way. That being said, some people are in the habit of closing a flue after the fire is completely out. Always check to make sure the flue is opened. There is a lever up top inside the fireplace. It should be forward (closest to you). Also, when you put logs in the fireplace, make sure they are not right near the front of the box as this can allow some smoke to come out. Always push logs towards the back. Finally, sometimes it's very windy which can create a downdraft. If a little smoke is coming in, close the glass doors partially or completely.
TV System: There's a lot of things you can do with this, none of it that difficult. I won't insult anyone's intelligence by telling them for the TV to work, it must be turned on, for the DVD or VCR to work, they must be turned on, etc. Please make sure to turn all pieces off when you're done watching.
Q: How can I watch TV?
For TV
in Great Room:
Turn on TV by Magnavox TV Remote. To watch
regular TV channels make sure TV is on a Channel (not Input AV1 or Input Av2)
.If you can’t see shows, you need to put the Input on TV. Once you get the Input you want, hit the
Volume Button to get rid of Input display screen.
If you want to watch a DVD, using Magnavox
Remote Control, put the channel on AV1. Turn on DVD Player and hit Play.
If you want to watch a VCR tape (Yeah, we
have them too), using the Magnavox Remote Control, put channel on AV2.
Turn on VCR and hit Play.
I now have a TIVO unit that has about 200
Movies on it, about 50 are kid’s Movies.
Remote is next to TIVO unit under the TV. Please keep it there as without the Remote,
the TIVO can’t be controlled. With Magnavox remote, set TV to HDMI. Then use
the TIVO Remote Control and hit the top TIVO button. Then select Shows. From here you can find the movie you want and
select it. On the left of the screen is a way to sort by things like Kid’s
Movies. I have the movies set up in
Alphabetical Order. With this remote
you can pause, speed up and skip commercials.
When done, Please don’t hit Delete Button as it will Delete the movie.
If you would, after watching DVD, VCR or
TIVO, put the TV channel back on a Channel for the next guest.
Note:
The Tivo Remote will not change the TV
channels.
Another Note:
If a Remote Control does not work there is a good chance that the
battery is dead. There are some
batteries in the top island cabinet closest to the dining room. This is a
moving target.
For TV
in Master Bedroom:
Turn on TV. TV must be on channel 3.
Turn on Digital Converter Box. Use converter remote control to change channels.
My wife suggests making sure Converter box is turned on first as if not TV will
make a lot of noise. Sound is controlled by TV Remote control.
Computer System:
The idea behind the Cabin is to get away from the real world for a while. I have a computer in the bunkroom that can be used if necessary. As to internet, I've found that most people have smart phones that work better than the internet access available on this mountain in these woods. If you do need internet access for a computer you can set up your cellphone to be a hotspot which then gives your computer WIFI access to the internet. Different phones have different specific direction to do this. Essentially, you go to settings and select Hotspot option, then search for it on your computer as a WIFI site. Back to the computer, it is a relic but still works. To turn it on, flip the switch on the surge protector on top of the desk shelf. If the last person had followed these directions, everything should come on. If not, you may have to turn on some individual component (monitor, computer box or speakers).
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP !!!
